Demonstrate Market Approval for Lighting Components such as Drivers, Light Engines, Modules and Arrays
The safety and compliance of a lighting product depend on more than the finished luminaire. LED modules, drivers, lampholders, ballasts, transformers, connectors, wiring, polymeric materials, and other critical components can directly affect protection against electrical, fire, mechanical, and thermal hazards.
Intertek provides testing and certification services for lighting components and complete lighting products, helping manufacturers identify applicable requirements, evaluate component suitability, and support efficient product certification and market access. Our experts can help verify that critical components are evaluated to the appropriate safety standards, used within their certified ratings, and installed in accordance with applicable Conditions of Acceptability.
The fact sheet covers common lighting components and applicable UL and CSA standards, critical component evaluation, certification marks, common compliance issues, and considerations for ETL certification and market access.
Lighting Component Standards
Intertek can test and evaluate lighting components to applicable North American safety standards, including:
- UL 8750 / CSA C22.2 No. 250.13 – LED modules, arrays, COBs, and LED drivers
- UL 8752 – OLED lighting modules
- UL 879A / CSA C22.2 No. 207 – Components for electric signs and illuminated displays
- UL 8754 – Connectors for LED modules
- UL 496 / CSA C22.2 No. 43 – Lampholders
- UL 935 / UL 1029 / CSA C22.2 No. 74 – Fluorescent and HID ballasts
- UL 379 – Transformers used with swimming pool and spa luminaires
Component Evaluation and Certification
Selecting a certified component does not automatically ensure compliance of the finished lighting product. Components must be appropriate for their intended application and used within the electrical, thermal, environmental, and other limitations established during certification. Recognized Components also require evaluation as part of the completed end-product certification process.
Intertek can support manufacturers with component safety testing, ETL certification, design and construction reviews, gap assessments, failure analysis, performance and environmental testing, and testing of complete luminaires and lighting systems.
